The first thing that you need to know is that you have to make choices as a blackjack player. In other words, you are not relying completely on a machine or other players to dictate your next move. If you do not know what choices to make you are going to put yourself in a very difficult position. For this reason, it is very important that you become familiar with the basic strategy known as optimal choice. What does this mean? Simply put, with this strategy you are learning which choices to make as well as what criteria you should base your decision on.

With any blackjack strategy, be aware that your moves will vary based on several factors including the number of decks in play as well as the house rules. Although most blackjack tables are similar, there are some rules that can and will change based on the casino that you are playing at.

The basic blackjack strategy is not difficult to understand. It is based on the two cards that you are holding in your hand, and the dealer’s face up card. With this information in front of you, you will be able to make one of six decisions: hit, stand, double then hit, double then stand, split, or surrender. For instance, if your hand equals 16 and the dealer is holding a face up card of 7 or 8, you should hit. If the dealer has a face up card of 2, 3, 4, 5, or 6 you should stand. And if the dealer has a 9, 10, or ace you should surrender.

With this basic blackjack strategy you should be able to achieve more success in no time at all. Although not advanced, knowing what choices are available to you and which ones to make should put you in position for the best chance of winning.
